THE ROOTS by Mohlouwa Harry Sease

The main intension of the book is to let an African child understand him or herself and let him or her be the one to define him or herself. Make the universe know who you really are and never let them define you but let them respect you for who you are. The universe responds to all of us on how we see and explain ourselves to the world. It is time to see ourselves through the eyes of an African and not a western person. We need not explain ourselves rather we have to be proud of our genes nor should I say our Roots. This book was brought about by a youth debate I happened to watch and listen to on television about Africanism hence I made a vow to let the world know Africanism from an African and not a Western Cultural Professor who believes he had done a research about Africans and he is the master of African culture and custom. If Africanism is not in your blood, you can never claim to be an expert in Africanism. Rather be an expert in whom you were born to be. You may have some knowledge but you are not and expert. It was my intension to initially write this book in an African language but realised that western people beliefs, custom and culture are dominating and poisoning the minds of young Africans including themselves about Africanism hence I decided to clear the mud and clarify certain things to them too. It is however my intension to translate this book to one or two African languages. We believe and get our lessons from nature hense we used to be called Naturalis in Afrikaans or Naturalists. Unfortunately due to some wise Afrikaners who said that means Nader die Hell ( close to hell) it was despised of and they were forced to change it. In fact that was the closest to explaining us.

I was born at a farm called Dankbaar in a district of a small town called Petrusburg. The eleventh child of thirteen born from one mother. The sixth son. The only one in the family with the birth mark on the forehead termed Lesiba in Sesotho ( stout haar in Afrikaans). I cannot explain the meaning of this in English. It is complicated. I attended primary school at Petrusburg, most of the high school at Makabelane Qwaqwa and I Matriculated at Moemedi High school in Bloemfonten. My first job was as a labourer at Dankbaar whilst helping with teaching at Doornkop Farm School and later I became an “unqualified” teacher at Leretlhabetse Secondary School in Koffiefontein. The aim was to acquire a free government bursary after two years and qualify as a teacher but I then decided to join the De Beers Diamond mines as labourer before two years could end and finally left the mines as an Occupational Hygienist. I tried business but struggled and later joined the Government to become a mine Inspector. My first book is called Common Sense and this is my second.

SECRET MISSION by Jill Morsbach

The polluted, overcrowded earth, one and a half centuries from now, is dying. Benny de Vos discovers as a twelve-year-old that he was born in this future time and has been sent back by his scientist father in a time bubble, to undertake a critical Mission to Save Planet Earth. Benny’s father has given him a unique thought-waving power as well as a list of evils that he must eradicate in order to ensure the future of the planet. The evils on the list all concern man’s destruction of nature. But Benny is still in junior school and the Mission seems to be a daunting task. Using his thought power in the present-day environment, where he lives as a foster child in the Cederberg mountains north of Cape Town, he secretly strives to fight these evils. He is helped by his foster cousin, Emma, and his friend, Donovan, who is struggling to come to terms with the deaths of his father and sister, killed in a taxi war on the Cape flats. However, in every step of his Mission, Benny unintentionally wreaks local havoc. In the end he hasn’t saved the planet but has managed to save other things which are of importance in his own small world.

FLIGHT by Jill Morsbach

Sixteen-year-old Alfeera Julies, living in the (fictitious) working class suburb of Flower Vale on the sprawling flatlands outside Cape Town, mentally creates an imaginary storybook world into which she escapes, peopling it with characters mainly based on familiars in the real world, and gleaning her ideas from her store of reject library books. Her “story-writing” is a survival mechanism she has built for herself, living as she does in a violent environment dominated by gang terrorism and drug abuse. Alfeera identifies with her imaginary heroine, Alpha Zeta, a South African super spy with the face, figure and resourcefulness that Alfeera lacks. Alpha is on a mission to save the world from the domination of crazy international terrorist leader El Mort, who turns the buildings of his enemies into solid glass, trapping the inhabitants inside and displaying them in grotesque and frozen tableaus. It is left to the reader to pick up the links between the parallel stories of Alfeera and Alpha, recounted in alternating sections in the novel. Only at the end do the two stories dovetail, when Alfeera is persuaded to write about the adventures of Alpha Zeta. A literary competition offers her the prospect of further study and of elevating herself out of the strife-torn gangland of Flower Vale.

AFRICAN PARADISE by Jill Morsbach

Kim Hastings, a freelance editor living in Cape Town, undertakes a gruelling and lifechanging journey with her eleven-year-old son, Gregory, to the war-torn Horn of Africa, in search of the boy’s half-Somali, half-Arab father, Gregor, who has been missing since before the son was born.
As twenty-year-old students at Cape Town University, Kim and Gregor have a short and passionate liaison before Gregor makes a hasty return to the New Kingdom of Punt (a fictitious state in northern Somalia) when a local clan war breaks out. The lives of his English foster parents, who live in Punt, are at risk. Kim only discovers she is pregnant after Gregor leaves, and conceals the real facts of her relationship from her son. Gregory’s discovery of the truth precipitates the search for his father.
There has been no word from Gregor for twelve long years. Kim and Gregory have no idea whether he is alive or dead. What they discover when they finally make it to Punt, accompanied by a friend of Kim’s brother, seems at first to be an idyllic African paradise. But piece by piece the fabric of illusion is shredded, until the three of them are confronted by terrifying and unpalatable truths.
African Paradise is a story of Africa, part fiction, part fantasy, combining a journey of discovery with a tale of hardship, superstition, power-seeking and, finally,
self-sacrifice. Innocence dies but not love: of a woman for her son, her brother and a man whose selfless heroism illuminates the African night

Mense! Hou op om te lewe volgens wêreldsnorme. Huwelike verbrokkel as gevolg van wat!!
Jy wat nou dalk my boek lees: Waar bevind jy jou vandag?

AMBAR by Coert Steenberg Engelbrecht

He stands in a dark corner pensively, staring as if he was looking at the night sky trying to count all the stars. His body absolutely motionless, his face stark, almost like a predator fixated on it’s pray. But there is softness in his blooding eyes, something in direct contrast with the rest of his tough, rugged body. He absorbs the bacteria into his system and it frantically attacks his body. For the bacteria its only defense is attack, but it’s no match for Ambar, he has fought and won a lot of battles much worse than this. For a moment he becomes nauseous and unsteady as his body reacts to the attack, and then it’s over. Ambar wishes he could just reveal himself to the man and scare the living daylight out of him, but instead he crouches down on one knee and folds his wings around Caythlen. She tries to stay as quiet as possible as she hears the footsteps getting closer. It feels as if her heart is going to burst right out of her chest.

Ambar jumps into the car and grabs hold of Caythlen she is sitting directly behind the driver, on the side where the oncoming car is about to hit them. There is nothing Ambar can do to avoid the colision; he can just try to protect Caythlen from the impact. He pulls her close against his chest and wraps his wings tightly around her, forming a protective cocoon. He looks over his left shoulder, staring at the oncoming vehicle, as if he is thinking; try yout best!

ABOUT THESE FARM CATS by Charmaine Ann Gaynor

Set in the 1950s, farmer Josh adopts two kittens left motherless. This is unheard of on his farm, as the folk there know that the boss prefers dogs. He appoints his housemaid to care for the kittens and become their mommy. She reacts badly because she is only fifteen and is scared of the little bundles of fur. But she overcomes her fear and takes good care of them, despite the fact that they can be very naughty.

Life on Josh’s farm is interesting, as something new happens every day. The kittens grow into young cats, exploring the farm and getting to meet new animals. They also finally make friends with their “poor relations,” the barn cats.
Farmer Josh is a wise man and has many stories to tell his grandchildren who come to visit him from the city. The children learn about farm life, and when they leave with their mother, they have a greater understanding of the differences between life on the farm and life in the city.

In the end, Josh comes to believe that he is finally ready to meet a new woman, one who can be his friend and perhaps ….. his new wife.

This is the second book by Charmaine Ann Gaynor of Johannesburg, South Africa. She was inspired by her grandfather’s farm and her great love for her family and animals, specifically cats. “A large part of my childhood is in this story.

SPATSELS UIT MY LEWE deur Paula Paxton

So is elke gedig in hierdie bundel, n spatsel uit my lewe. My hart en my siel is verweef in elke woord.
Paula Paxton (nee Mitchell) gebore 18 Maart 1974 in Krugersdorp in die Wes Rand. Ek word groot in Randfontein, ‘n myndorpie net duskant Krugersdorp.

Onomastics entails the study of names and naming systems. The discipline is derived from the Greek word onoma meaning ‘name’. In most languages of the world names are written with a capital letter. All of these form part of onomastics. The categories are manifold and some of the most important ones are following: anthroponymy, i.e the names of people. This may include first names, surnames, nick- or bynames, as well as ethnic names. They are all strongly linked to identity. The next prominent one is toponymy, i.e place names. All places whether streets, towns and landmarks carry names. Names in the economy, i.e brand names that include sponsors, as well as business names, also form a strong category. Then there are names inliterature, i.e. literary onomastics, as well as shipping names and wild animal names. Onomastics is an impressive multidisciplinary field of study as this book outlines.

Hy gaan skool by Welkom Volkskool en Goudveld Hoërskool.
